NAMI PROVIDER EDUCATION

What is NAMI Provider Education?

NAMI Provider is a NAMI Signature Program provided in a 4-hour seminar of in-service training taught by a team consisting of an adult with a mental health condition, a family member, and a mental health professional who is also a family member or has a mental health condition.

This evidence-based program is for healthcare organizations working directly with people affected by mental illness. The course equips healthcare staff with a deeper understanding of mental illness and the confidence to serve people and families collaboratively. It reflects a new knowledge base—the “lived experiences” of people coping with a mental illness or caring for someone who lives with a mental illness.

Why it matters?

More than one in five US Adults live with a mental illness. People living with mental illness have historically been negatively affected by stigma and bias in the health care system in the US. For many of those people, interactions with health care providers can be a negative - or even traumatic - experience. Provider Bias, both conscious and unconscious, and a lack of empathy can result in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. This can lead to mistrust of health care professionals and ultimately result in people choosing to forego accessing care all together.

NAMI Provider Education aims to provide health care professionals with a better understanding and empathy to what individuals with mental illness and their families are going through. NAMI Provider Education uses first hand story telling, evidence based and trauma informed education, and role playing techniques to help health care providers gain a better understanding of what it’s like to live with a mental illness or care for a loved one with a mental illness.
